Z Corp 3D Printing

Process Description

Z Corporation (Contex) have developed the MIT patented inkjet printing methodology to create a range of powder-binder printing devices. All systems follow the same process and the model variations offer benefits of larger component size or full colour CMYK printing.

The process involves injecting a waterbased adhesive binder into a layer of powder using HP inkjet printing technology. Once a layer has been printed a new powder layer is drawn over the top and the next layer is then printed. The component is therefore built up in a full bed of powder which helps to support the structure during construction and allows the creation of features such as overhangs or conformal assemblies.

Once the part is complete the surrounding powder must be removed. The component is then ready to be finished. In its ‘green’ state the part has very low strength. In order to improve the material characteristics parts must be coated with an infiltrant. These range from wax to high temperature epoxy resins or an elastomeric polyurethane. This variety of finishes is one of the primary benefits of the Zcorp systems.
